BIOGRAPHY
GEORGE KORFF : Born in Moscow, May 17, 1904.
Father : BARON JOHN KORFF.
Mather : PRINCESS MARIE GAGARIN, a waiting lady for the wife
of the Tzar.
1917: The Russian Revolution breaks out. George Korff's father and brother are killed by the Bolsheviks. George, then 13, his mother and sister are able to escape death and after three years of hiding and incarceration, is able to live and study in Yugoslavia, at the University of Art in Belgrade. From there to Paris to the Ecole de Beaux Arts and The Sorbonne. It is here in Paris where he gets a recognition for his illustrations. 1938: He arrives in the United States - New York City. Here he meets and marries a Puerto Rican women, Anna Velazquez. She bears him two children: Ramon Korff, born May 2, 1941 and Yolanda Korff, born April 20, 1946. 1939-1945: In this period, most of his works are illustrations for various books, record albums, commercial and advertising companies. The rest of his work consist of Impressionistic paintings, drawings and strong political cartoons that demonstrate the flagrant and blind government which oppressed the poor, the blacks and Hispanics in this country at that time. George Korff wanted peaceful coexistence between the Soviet Union and the United States, which has now come about. The end of discrimination between minority groups, especially amongst Hispanic and blacks in which great advancement have arisen now. George Korff is black-listed in the treacherous McCarthy era. He is unable to work under his name in the United States, so most of his illustrations are dome for European publications, still under a different name. He could not get work in the United States. The pictures you see her are just some of his art works from the 1940's and 1950's. The are done in tempra, oil and charcoal. You will notice that some of his works are done on poor materials, which was due to the lack of founds. /The paintings are all in excellent conditions./ But, no matter what materials he used, George Korff's works go beyond technique and strongly project feelings, spirit and energy. The paintings are a statement of himself, the people and the conditions that surrounded him in the 1940's and 1950's in the United States. 1975 : George Korff is killed in New York City
